The company produces ethanol by subjecting algae to stress, which stimulates the plant to produce biofuels. The Aquatech process uses sewer water or CO2 stripped from a power stack to feed the algae.

University of South Dakota
The University of South Dakota has undertaken a multi-year strategic initiative to expand faculty and student research and creativity, increase grant and contract awards, and commercialize research The U. has several research and creative clusters, including the Center for Research & Development of Light-activated Materials, Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence in neuroscience and in cardiovascular, the Center for Detecting Rare Physics Processes at Homestake, Missouri River Institute, and more. New PhD programs have been created to offer USD students exceptional training and mentoring in Materials Chemistry, Computational Science and Statistics (joint with SDSU), Biomedical Engineering (joint with SDSMT), and Political Science. The U continues to expand its capacity to collaborate with industry. Researchers participate in sponsored R&D, and serve as consultants to manufacturing and business partners. An expanding portfolio of innovative technologies is available to collaborators and the U is pleased to work jointly with industry to bring these technologies to market.

USD GEAR Center
The South Dakota Public University and Research Center (University Center) is a collaboration of the South Dakota Board of Regents and all of the regental universities in the state. The GEAR Center was opened in Spring, 2009 in Sioux Falls to stimulate applied research and commercialization in South Dakota. The U’s Biomedical Engineering program and Center for Research & Development of Light-activated Materials are both housed in the GEAR CENTER.

The USD Discovery District is a resource to help grow companies in South Dakota and connect universities with innovation-driven businesses. The Master Plan envisions a dynamic environment for students, researchers and entrepreneurs developing new innovations. The 80-acre site includes the Graduate Education and Applied Research (GEAR) Center that provides a physical location for both private sector and university research activities, including USD’s Biomedical Engineering Program (BME). At 22,000 square feet, the Center’s specialized research suites, equipment and technical staff support public and private sector research activities. An Aseptic GMP Production and Training Center provides pilot-scale cGMP and BME faculty and students are actively engaged in industry collaborations to advance the frontiers of biomedical science and engineering bring new products to market.
