Brookings, S.D. – Dig a little into the success of biotechnology in Brookings, S.D., and the statistics become more and more impressive. The community of 23,000 is home to 17 bioscience companies. Another 25 companies are located within the Brookings commute area. “It’s a lot of jobs,” said Kevin Kephart, vice president for research and economic development at SDSU and a member of the board of directors of SD Biotech. “They’re here in the community, they’re hiring people and really creating an economic engine.”

Sioux Falls, S.D.– Research meets education and economic development in EPSCoR, South Dakota’s Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research grant from the National Science Foundation. The goal is to increase science literacy and drive science-based economic development, and the effort is gaining traction in the state. It’s part of a $20 million program supported by the National Science Foundation and supplemented with $12 million in state funds. The goals support a 2020 master plan in science and technology commissioned by Gov. Dennis Daugaard.

Alumend is a wholly owned subsidiary of Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center in Sioux Falls, SD. The company's products are based on a platform tissue bonding technology that uses light-activated materials to repair blood vessels in people who suffer PAD. Alucent Medical, of which Alumend is the sole shareholder, has licensed the technology to treat peripheral artery disease.
