Bioscience Industry in South Dakota a Key Player in Industry’s Efforts to Improve Lives
TEConomy Partners and the Biotechnology Innovation Organization recently released the 2018 Investment, Innovation, and Job Creation in a Growing U.S./Bioscience Industry report, highlighting bioscience’s contributions to the U.S. and local economies. The report showcases South Dakota’s growth: In 2016, the state’s bioscience industry employed 6,601 across 504 individual business establishments, representing a 2.4% growth from 2014. South Dakota has seen recent increases in NIH funding awards—in FY 2017, state institutions were awarded $23.5 million, up from $20.6 million in FY 2015. Additionally, South Dakota produced 303 bioscience-related patents in the 2014-2017 period.
