Sioux Falls, South Dakota – A South Dakota company primed to revolutionize aquaculture on the prairie will tell its story at BIO this week. Prairie AquaTech has developed and validated technology to meet the increasing global demand for fish protein and help address the nation’s $11 billion annual trade deficit for seafood products, the nation’s second largest trade deficit in natural resources, oil being its largest. Born out of research at South Dakota State University and backed by early stage venture capital firm Innovation Partners, Prairie AquaTech uses biotechnology to convert agricultural commodities like soybean meal into a high-quality protein used in aquaculture and other animal feeds.

Sioux Falls, South Dakota – A new research park and an expanding medical industry are part of the growing success story the Sioux Falls Development Foundation plans to tell at BIO. “I think we’re close to about 15 scheduled meetings with companies that have an interest in South Dakota, doing business here and well as partnering with our major health sys-tems, Avera and Sanford,” said Dean Dziedzic, director of strategic initiatives. With a metro area of about 250,000, Sioux Falls is South Dakota's largest city and benefits from a unique combination of large health care employers, a strong financial services sec-tor and a growing tech start-up scene. The Development Foundation, a member of the South Dakota Biotech Association, has attended BIO for the last five years.

Brookings, S.D.-based Medgene Labs is an animal health company focusing on the rapid production of vaccines for emerging diseases. Backed by early stage venture capital firm, Innovation Partners, Medgene Labs develops diagnostic and therapeutic products for emerging diseases that pose a significant threat to the population and economy. Disease targets of the company are typically ones that are transmitted between species, including humans.
