Science at the Depths of the Earth

The BBC spotlighted one of the most ambitious scientific collaborations of our time—and Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) is at its heart.

Located 1,500 meters beneath the Black Hills of South Dakota, SURF is playing a critical role in the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), an international effort to uncover why the universe is made of matter instead of antimatter. Massive detectors, housed in cavernous spaces deep underground, will capture elusive neutrino signals sent from Fermilab, 1,300 km away in Illinois.

This isn’t just a physics experiment—it's a global mission involving over 1,400 scientists from 35 countries, coming together to answer some of the universe's biggest questions.

Proud to see SURF helping shape the future of particle physics, right from the depths of an old gold mine.
